Description

A watchman's primary duty is to thwart illegal activity at his employer’s property. Some use "watchman" and "security guard" interchangeably. In some cases, a security guard is trained to handle threats, while a watchman might be more likely to call the police.

A watchman can either be armed or unarmed and may spend his shift stationary at a security desk or mobile on patrol. Watchmen often wear uniforms and are outfitted with radios, alarms, cameras and scanners.
Surveillance of Property
Night watchman duties include primarily guarding property, such as empty buildings after hours. In addition to watching for intruders, they look for other hazards that might cause a fire, water damage or other issues. Mobile watchmen regularly patrol an employer’s premises to stay vigilant against possible threats.
They look for signs of illegal entry, checking for unlocked or damaged doors and windows. Watchmen who monitor campuses with multiple locations might do most of their work from their car, driving from building to building, checking doors and windows and responding to any alarms that are set off – sometimes by an employee or service provider who doesn't properly turn off an alarm before entering.
